You might be reading this and thinking that what you need is a job with ‘proper ‘wages, which is what some young people tend to think because there are friends to meet, fashions to keep up with, clubs to dance away the night and beautiful blue seas to swim in. Life is an expensive business.

Well, it is true that a ‘real job’ will give more fun money right now, but just take a moment to think about your future.

Do you still want to be in that same ‘real’ job in five years’ time? Does it sound like a good thing that you will probably be in the same role, earning only slightly more money and feeling like your life is a  long wait at a dreary bus stop?

Just how far that will the wage, the one that is good enough for now, stretch into the future once you have decided to leave home, buy a house, a new car or start a family?

And what happens if that job suddenly ends, if you are made redundant one day and find yourself with a lack of qualifications, a lot of work experience and right back where you started?

Yes, you might apply for a higher role in the same line of work but without previous experience at that level you are likely to find yourself frustrated by a lack of success and facing starting all over again on a  similar wage. That will hurt when you know that you are worth more and have so much more to offer.

Well, there is another way of working, one that might not seem too financially brilliant at first but which will in time build real skills, gain you a recognised qualification and be your pathway into a future position  (and pay scale) that will take you much further than your imagination can stretch right now.

I am talking about apprenticeships, your future’s new best friend.

If all you know about apprenticeships is that they do not pay as much as ‘proper’ jobs, consider these facts:

  • An apprenticeship is a real job because you will work for at least 30 hours per week
  • You will receive paid holidays, just the same as other employees
  • You will gain a nationally recognised qualification
  • Employers will see that you have real practical experience in a wide range of job duties, which is a very attractive reason to employ you
  • You are investing in your future and making your life work towards your dreams coming true with every passing day

If that is not enough to make you stop and consider why an apprenticeship is a great option to take, consider this research from The Apprenticeship Guide 2017:

‘Research shows that apprentices earn, on average, around £77,000 more over their lifetime than other employees…you will also be more employable than those who leave education without these qualifications.    You’ll get at least 20 days of paid holiday per year, plus bank holidays.’
